Goretzka gives Nagelsmann a promise in order to go to the Euros

In just 44 days, the 2024 Euros will start with the game Germany vs. Scotland in Munich. One player who desperately wants to be part of Germany's squad is Leon Goretzka. After the Champions League semifinal between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, he reaffirmed his desire to be called up by DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann.

In the most recent international break, DFB coach Julian Nagelsmann decided against calling up Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka - who up until this point was considered to be a regular in the team. But the 29 year old has not yet given up on his dream to play at this year's Euros for Germany.

Nagelsmann, however, seems to have found a perfect midfield pairing for Germany in Toni Kroos and Robert Andrich - right now, there is no place in the starting eleven for Goretzka. Since Nagelsmann knows about Goretzka's desire to play regularly, he decided to call up other midfielders in his place, who would be more willing to accept their role as a rotation player.

Does that mean that Goretzka's own ego is in his way of playing for the national team? According to himself, that is not the case; In an interview after Bayern's 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinal, Goretzka told Sky Germany:

“I'd accept every role that is given to me, no question about it. I don't think that Julian [Nagelsmann] thinks I'm incapable of accepting my role in the team and helping it whenever and however I can - I've proven that when he was at Bayern.”

Goretzka's recent performances and this “promise” have given Nagelsmann enough reasons to consider him for the national team once again. Whether or not he will decide to rely on the 57-time national player (14 goals) remains to be seen.
