Union extend with Schäfer: "The club has always supported me."

FC Union Berlin confirmed a contract extension for Hungarian international Andras Schäfer early Wednesday morning.

Hungarian international Andras Schäfer has extended his contract with Germany's Köpenick capital city side. Terms of the 25-year-old's new deal were not disclosed. Schäfer - who joined Union Berlin in the January 2022 transfer window - has had his struggles with both injury and controversy since joining the FCU, but both club and player saw fit to reaffirm their long-term commitment.

"Union is an exceptional club that has supported me, especially in my difficult phases," Schäfer noted in a club released statement, "I'm very happy to be back on the pitch for the club and I'm delighted to be able to continue doing so in the future."

"With Andras, we are keeping a young player who has developed excellently and continues to show great potential," FCU managing director Oliver Ruhnert added in his own statement, "His performances this season show how important Andras is for the team."

Schäfer has scored one goal and registered one assist in 17 league appearances for Union this season. Since joining the club, the 24-times capped Hungarian international (and 2021 Hungarian footballer of the year) has netted two tallies and provided three assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.
