RB Leipzig boss: Werner will be sold this summer if he doesn't sign an extension
RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff says Timo Werner will be sold this summer if he doesn't sign a new contract with the club.
Timo Werner will not begin the 2019/2020 season as a RB Leipzig player unless he signs a new contract first, says the club's CEO, Oliver Mintzlaff.
The highly-rated striker is under contract until 2020, and Mintzlaff underlines the striker will be sold this summer if he doesn't put pen to paper on a new deal.
"Logically, when the season ends at the latest, we need to know what happens next. Because, of course, a club like us can't afford to let Timo Werner go into his final contract year," Mintzlaff told Kicker and added that the club have come to a joint understanding with Werner and his agent about this.
Mintzlaff understands why Werner has attracted the likes of Bayern München and Liverpool, but believes the 22-year-old will remain in good hands at RB Leipzig if he opts to sign a contract extension.
"The fact that such a player is being courted by clubs that have a very different sporting perspective and financial opportunities that differ quite a lot from ours is logical. But as long as we develop as a club - and participation in the Champions League would obviously be very helpful in regard to that - I think Werner is still in good hands here," Mintzlaff said and added:
"If Timo isn't striving for the highest possible salary, then it would be a good investment in his sporting future."
Werner has made 21 appearances for RB Leipzig this season with 13 goals three assists to his name. He has netted nine times in 23 games for Germany.
