Report: Cancelo move due to lack of playing time, disagreements with Guardiola

The nearly unthinkable move of Joao Cancelo to Bayern Munich transpired due to a lack of playing time and disagreements with Pep Guardiola, according to the Daily Mail. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Cancelo asked the club for a winter transfer.
Joao Cancelo has found a place on the bench since he returned to Manchester City from Qatar. Coach Pep Guardiola has preferred 18-year-old Rico Lewis at right-back and Nathan Ake has even seen playing time at left-back.

Per the Daily Mail, Cancelo became a troublesome presence in the locker room and voiced his displeasure with Pep Guardiola on numerous occasions due to his playing time.

The Portuguese star was seen in Munich on Monday to complete his medical tests. Bayern have a purchase clause in the range of €70 million, but this number could be reduced in the summer.

Barcelona reportedly also tried to nab the versatile 28-year-old, but Bayern brass convinced Cancelo to join the record champions. Right-back Benjamin Pavard is linked with a move to Barcelona and Noussair Mazraoui is dealing with a post-covid heart issue.

According to Sky, Cancelo will immediately start on Wednesday against Mainz in the DFB-Pokal.
