Ballack endorses van Gaal to be German national team's first foreign coach

In an interview scheduled to published in the Monday print edition of Germany's preeminent footballing publication, German footballing legend Michael Ballack has endorsed Louis van Gaal for the German national team's vacant head-coaching position.
In Michael Ballack's opinion, the German national team's central objective should be simply to get back to basics. In an an interview scheduled to be published in the Monday print edition of Germany's Kicker Magazine. The former German national team captain essentially called what he witnessed during Tuesday's 2-1 win over France a step in the right direction.

"Clear and simple football with the drive  of getting into the game through duels," Ballack notes in the forthcoming interview, "The fans can identify with it. [The coaching search] should be oriented towards the best. I would take an experienced man and Louis van Gaal is an exceptional coach."

"Van Gaal brings almost everything needed," Ballack continues, "He's certainly not an easy guy, but that's not a bad thing. I think the team needs a fresh impetus. He's a person who commands respect, brings with him extensive experience, and knows the full repertoire of coaching."

Ballack actually never worked under van Gaal directly, having departed Bayern München for Chelsea in 2006 long before the now 72-year-old began his 20-month-stint with Bayern between August 2009 and April of 2011. The Dutchman - who did improve his German significantly during the FCB appointment - led Bayern to the domestic double in his first season.

Germany have nevertheless never hired a non-German coach to serve as their Bundestrainer. To do so before the Euros would certainly sting the nation's pride somewhat. Ballack addressed this issue specifically in his interview.

"His Dutch passport is something we'll have to come to terms with," Ballack said.
