Liverpool to compete with Bayern for Eberl?
Germany's main sporting tabloid reports that Liverpool F.C. are also interested in bringing recently terminated German footballing administrator Max Eberl on board in the front office.
After his sensational firing from the RB Leipzig front office two weeks ago, German footballing rumor mills have continually linked Gladbach and Leipzig manager Max Eberl with a move to FC Bayern München. The 50-year-old is reportedly set to take on the board-member-for-sport position vacated by Hasan Salihamidzic after the FCB manager's sacking on the final day of last season.
Germany's main sporting tabloid nevertheless now reports that Bayern do face some competition for Eberl's services. EPL side Liverpool F.C. may be interested in bringing the Eberl aboard in an as of yet undefined role. The Merseyside Reds are currently being helmed at the sporting director level by another seasoned German footballing administrator, former Köln and Wolfsburg personnel executive Jörg Schmadtke.
Schmadtke recently presided over an expensive summer transfer window in which Bundesliga players Wataru Endo (Stuttgart) and Dominik Szoboszlai (Leipzig) were among the players in his €172 million total outlays. The Merseyside Reds have gotten off to a largely successful start to the season, but will be looking for a new sporting director already next summer when Schmadtke's short-term commitment ends.
The EPL giants would have no problem paying Leipzig the transfer fee due for the still under-contract Eberl. Bayern themselves may also not necessarily be interested in filling Salihamidzic's old position until newly appointing sporting director Christoph Freund is permitted at least one transfer window as the chief personnel executive.
In a recent interview with Bavaria's "Bayrische Rundfunk" radio, FCB honorary President Uli Hoeneß - drafted back into active duty in the club's front office after Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn were sacked on the final day of last season - said he considered the Bayern administrative team to be "fully staffed for the next six to twelve months".
