Stevens puts an end to Schalke's goalkeeper rotation policy

Ralf Fährmann was Schalke's clear first-choice keeper during the first half of the season, but he lost his spot to Alexander Nübel at the start of 2019.

Fährmann still got to play every once in a while, though, because the now former Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco had a clear rotation policy that meant Nübel would be in goal for the club's league games while Fährmann would play in the Champions League and in the DFB-Pokal.

However, in the build-up to Schalke's DFB-Pokal quarter-final against Werder Bremen on Wednesday, the club's interim coach, Huub Stevens, says Tedesco's rotation policy has been abolished.

"If we were talking about a whole season, then I'd consider switching between the goalkeepers. But with just seven, eight or nine games left to play this season, quality is the decisive factor for me. That's logical," Stevens said, as quoted by WAZ.

"It doesn't make sense to let another goalkeeper play to keep him in rhythm. That's not a possibility for us at the moment," he added.

Nübel has started both Schalke's games under Stevens so far.
