Thomas Müller has spent his entire career at Bayern München after coming through the youth ranks at the Bavarian club.

But as Müller gets older, an era is slowly coming to an end, argues former German international Stefan Effenberg who feels the 29-year-old should think about joining a club abroad.

"He has shaped an era which is moving towards its end. We saw that with Schweinsteiger and Lahm. He's very deeply rooted in Munich and at Bayern. But, of course, that can't be the decisive criteria when planning the future. That's something he has to consider," Effenberg wrote in a column for t-online.de and continued:

"I can only generally say that in terms of personal development, it's very good and never wrong to get to know another country. I speak from my own experience."

Effenberg left Bayern to join Fiorentina in 1992. He also played for Al-Arabi in Qatar during his career as a footballer.
