André Schürrle admits he has thought about bringing his career as a footballer to an end and reveals he can imagine hanging up his boots within a few years.

Speaking on Bild's 'Phrasenmäher' podcast, the 28-year-old said:

"I would lie if I said I had never thought about it. Particularly in the difficult phases, you think, 'Do I still need and want this at all?' Year after year, I want to decide for myself if I want to carry on, if I still have the motivation and if my body feels ready for it. I don't know, maybe I will play another year, maybe two more."

Schürrle joined Spartak Moscow on a loan deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, and the winger understands why he was deemed surplus to requirements at Signal Iduna Park.

"I can fully understand that. I would probably have come to the same conclusion based on my performances and the figures and statistics over the last two years. That's what counts in football at the end of the day," Schürrle said.

The 28-year-old has scored two goals and made four assists in 13 appearances for Spartak Moscow this season.
