Patrick Herrmann nearly left Borussia Mönchengladbach during Dieter Hecking's tenure as coach from 2016 to 2019, but insists he never wanted to depart the club.

"I never wanted to leave Borussia! It isn't nice to feel that you're no longer needed - especially not when you're very attached to a city and its club. In the end, the club changed its mind, not me," said Herrmann, who has spent his entire career at Gladbach, in an interview with Sport Bild.

Herrmann opened talks with the club over a contract extension in March while Dieter Hecking was still at the helm. Asked if he knew at the time that Hecking would be replaced by Marco Rose ahead of the 2019/20 season, Herrmann answered:

"I didn't know that. Maybe I suspected it a little, because I came close to leaving the club twice under Dieter Hecking. In the summer of 2018, he told me very clearly that it would be a tough season for me."

The 28-year-old ended up penning a new contract until 2022. He has made 12 appearances under Marco Rose so far, racking up five goals and two assists.
