Xabi Alonso: "A lot went against us, but that was our own fault"

Bayer Leverkusen ultimately have themselves to blame for their 3-0 defeat to Bayern in the Champions League, according to Xabi Alonso.

After watching his Bayer Leverkusen side lose 3-0 to Bayern Munich in the first Champions League last-16 match between the two sides, Xabi Alonso was self-critical.

Things didn't go the way Leverkusen wanted on a night when they conceded a goal after a big mistake by goalkeeper Matej Kovar, were shown a red card and conceded a penalty.

Ultimately, though, Leverkusen only have themselves to blame for the defeat, according to Xabi Alonso.

“A lot went against us today, but that was our own fault. We didn't have good control and made big mistakes. That's obviously very annoying,” Xabi Alonso said at a press conference.

While things may look bleak for Leverkusen now, Alonso certainly hasn't given up ahead of next week's return leg at home.

"It will take time to process this game. But it's not over until it's over. The craziest things have already happened in football and we'll fight to make something happen next week."
