Heidenheim have now moved one point off Bochum in 16th and are now in 17th close to securing the play-off spot following a poor set of results in the Rückrunde.

The game was pretty balanced but Heidenheim were more clinical throughout and took advantage of their 1.77 expected goals.

Overall, the home team did not suffer from a lack of possession as they countered effectively and used their better quality to overrule Kiel's chances away from home.

After the tie, Kiel striker Steven Skryzbski said: “In the Hinrunde, I barely scored. Now it is so that shots go in. Unfortunately I didn't score today. The frustration sits deep within.”

He added: “We needed to have taken the break to come back stronger than usual. This didn't happen this time out.”
