Borussia Dortmund are interested in Belgian international midfielder Axel Witsel, WAZ understands.

The 29-year-old, who plays for Chinese side Tianjin Quanjian, has reportedly been identified as a top target by Dortmund coach Lucien Favre and sporting director Michael Zorc.

Witsel left Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia to join Tianjin Quanjian for €40 million in 2017, but could return to Europe after he played a strong World Cup for Belgium. In that case, the central midfielder would probably have to accept a wage cut as he currently earns as much as €18 million a year in China.

Borussia Dortmund have already signed one central midfielder this summer in the form of Thomas Delaney who has joined the club from Werder Bremen. Along with Delaney, Julian Weigl and Mahmoud Dahoud are said to be fighting for a place in the starting eleven while Nuri Sahin and Sebastian Rode will be allowed to leave the club for the right price.

Witsel has made 47 appearances for Tianjin Quanjian with six goals and three assists to his name.
