Werder Bremen and FC Heidenheim drew 0-0 in the first leg of the Bundesliga relegation play-off at the Weserstadion on Thursday.

Both sides struggled to create chances in a tense game that saw the home side fail to capitalize on their dominance in possession against a well-organized Heidenheim side.

With 87 minutes on the clock, Werder captain Niklas Moisander was shown his second yellow card for a late challenge, which means he will be suspended for Monday's return leg at Voith-Arena in Heidenheim.

In the closing minutes, Werder's Josh Sargent had a shot saved on the line before Timo Beermann came close with a header after a corner at the other end.

Ultimately, neither side managed to break the deadlock, so everything is still very much open ahead of the second leg on Monday.
