Report: FSV Mainz 05 have five high-profile players for sale

The recent loan of keeper Florian Müller to Freiburg lined the coffers of one of Germany's Carnival Clubs with €200,000 in fees. That's a paltry pittance compared to the type of cash they hope to procure for five of their team's best.

The financially beleaguered small-market club of FSV Mainz 05 hasn’t had the capital to do much of anything in this summer’s transfer market. The COVID crisis exacerbated the organization’s already precarious financial footing.

German magazine SportBild reports that the club still wishes to turn some of its more valuable players into cash. Managing director Rouven Schröder told the publication, “Everything’s cooking in the transfer market. If there’s a request, we’ll gauge every opportunity.”

Players reportedly for sale include last season’s top-club-goal scorer Robin Quaison (who could fetch upwards of €10 million), striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta (€12-15 million), center half Moussa Niakhate (€11 million), attacking midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius (€4 million), and right back Ridle Baku (€5-7 million).

The only player Schröder explicitly seemed to rule out was 23-year-old defender Jeremiah St. Juste. "He's off the table," Schröder noted.

There obviously exists no guarantee that the Pfälzer can obtain optimal market value for any of these players in pandemic times. Thus far, most of the rumors involving the quintet center around mid-table EPL clubs who may be able to strike a bargain.

Schröder also remained tight-lipped about what the Nullfünfter might plan to do with an influx of cash. The director denied rumors that his club might be interested in bringing former striker Yoshinori Muto back to the Bundesliga some weeks ago. Mainz has not been linked with any players since.
