Mark Uth stable and responsive following horrific head collision

The scenes during the early stages of Sunday's Schalke-Augsburg match were frightening indeed.

Schalke's Mark Uth lay motionless and unconscious on the WWK-Arena turf after a particularly nasty collision with Augsburg's Felix Udoukhai.

It took over ten minutes for medical staff to revive Uth and stretcher him off the pitch. Reports from the local hospital thankfully confirm that he is stable and responsive.
The injury was so gruesome that match official Manuel Gräfe asked both teams if they even wished to continue playing the match. Non-team-affiliated paramedics rushed onto the pitch to tend to an urgent medical emergency.

During the match, Schalke tweeted out the first cautious all-clear. The club's account noted that Uth had recovered consciousness and responded well to the IV medical technicians on the pitch.

After the match, Uth's status was updated. He would spend the night in the hospital with a diagnosed concussion, but could be discharged as early as tomorrow. Uth himself took to social media late in the day to thank well-wishers and assure all that he was doing "quite well."

Early indications appear to signal that a worse-case scenario had been averted. Trainer Manuel Baum visited his injured player reported that Uth was able to watch the final minutes of the match on television.

"Of course, he was annoyed as hell," Baum noted.
