Jan-Moritz Lichte has been relieved of his duties as Mainz coach, the Bundesliga side confirmed on Monday.

Lichte was put in charge on an interim basis in September as a replacement for Achim Beierlorzer.

"Jan-Moritz Lichte is an absolute football expert, who has made a special contribution to the club in a difficult situation. We owe him our thanks for that. We have agreed with him that we will sit down together and discuss to what extent there can be a future role for him at Mainz 05," said Mainz chairman Stefan Hofmann in a statement.

In the same statement, 'Die Nullfünfer' also confirmed that ex-coach Martin Schmidt takes over the newly-created position as sporting director while Christian Heidel has been appointed to the board of directors.
