Fantasy Bundesliga: Matchday 21 Review
With the conclusion of Matchday 21, we will be taking a closer look at selected performances and trends in detail as well as what to to look out for before the next matchday in this recap.
Leipzig and Frankfurt keep rolling
Leipzig and Frankfurt continued their 3 and 4 game winning forms respectively, reflecting in many points from the offensive players of both teams. Christopher Nkunku MID (16M, 17) was once again the highest scoring Leipzig player. Unfortunately for this writer, while he continues to sing the praises for Nkunku as a fantasy option, he has not had enough transfers to afford bringing him in and misses out on yet another haul. However, with big midweek action against Liverpool in the Champions League, there may be some slight risk in bringing in the likes of Nkunku and Olmo if not yet already owned. Leipzig does have a good fixture against Hertha Berlin away at the Olympiastadion on the Sunday standalone fixture though, so differential picks such as Amadou Haidara MID (9.1M, 12) and Emil Forsberg FOR (11.1M, 0) might potentially pay off after the former received praise from the coach for his recent performances, while the latter is ruled out for the midweek game against Liverpool, and could play a key part on Sunday if deemed fit.
From Frankfurt, usual suspects Andre Silva FOR (19.4M, 15) and Filip Kostic MID (17.9M, 14) had good performances again while Evan Ndicka DEF (6.8M, 20) scored for the second game in a row, getting a massive 20 points after last week’s 19 point haul and might be one to consider if managers don’t already own Erik Durm DEF (3.6M, 12) and want to invest in Frankfurt’s defense. One thing to note is that they face Bayern Munich at home on MD 22. Offensive playmakers Daichi Kamada (13.7M, 14) and Amin Younes MID (7.2M, 8) had decent showings, but owners of Younes could consider shipping him out after he was subbed off once again around the 70 minutes mark, showing that he might have a high floor but a low ceiling as a fantasy player.
Kalajdzic the best value striker?
Sasa Kalajdzic FOR (6M, 13) scored his 4th goal in 3 games in Stuttgart’s 1-1 draw against Hertha Berlin, making good use of his first team starts due to Nico Gonzalez being out from injury. His fine goalscoring form is reflected with his impressive fantasy scoring (15,14,13) in recent starts and appears set to continue, with fixtures against bottom clubs Koln (A) and Schalke (H) coming up.
Taiwo Awoniyi FOR (7.8M, 13) is also showing that he can have a good fantasy performance, getting 13 points without scoring or assisting, including 6 points just from passes to shots, and could be another differential budget striker who has a good standalone fixture against Hoffenheim (H) in MD 21.
Standalone fixtures coming up
In the upcoming MD 22, there will be 5 standalone fixtures apart from the standard Saturday games, which might be a chance to pick more differential picks who have a high likelihood to start. Notably, Wolfsburg play Armenia Bielfeld in the first match on Friday and look to be in fine form, continuing their 6 game clean sheet streak. Wout Weghorst FOR (18.8M, 6) is the recommendation for this game. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund have a must-win game in the Revierderby against Schalke in their race for a Champions League spot. One player to consider is the returning Thorgan Hazard MID (12.5M, 0).
Shocks of the matchday
Kevin Mbabu DEF (11.3M 17) had 17 points with no goals or assists, 8 of which were from goal attempts.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s midfielders struggled to create offensive chances against Wolfsburg, with no midfielder having more than 5 points, but this might change as they face Mainz (H) next matchday.
