Union Berlin have confirmed that Christian Gentner will be departing the club at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old's contract expires this summer and will not be extended.

"Christian Gentner has played a significant role in the development of our team over the last two years," commented Union Berlin managing director for professional football Oliver Ruhnert.

"On and off the pitch he is a role model of professionalism, commitment and character. We respect this joint decision, wish him only the best and thank Christian and his family for having the courage to take this path with Union, despite many skeptics at the beginning."

The former Wolfsburg and Stuttgart midfielder has spent two seasons at Union Berlin, chipping in with four goals and three assists in 55 games for the club.
