Mainz reveal that Phillipp Mwene will not renew

By Peter Weis   @PeterVicey

A string of solid performances as a reliable wingback in Bo Svennsson's re-tooled Mainz side has seen Phillipp Mwene's market value pushed up and even earned him his first call-up to the Austrian senior national team.

On Thursday, die Nullfünfter confirmed that Mwene was intent on testing the market and would not renew his expiring contract.

wenty-seven-year-old fullback Phillipp Mwene has served as a key cog in FSV Mainz 05's second half turnaround. Mwene recently put together a run of strong showings in which he's tallied once and bagged two assists. His transfermarkt.de value has risen to its highest point since the Rheinhessen acquired him from Pfälzer rivals FC Kaiserslautern on a free some three years ago.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Austria national team head-coach Franco Foda gave Mwene his first call up to the senior side as part of the ÖFB's preliminary roster for the Euros. This development may have possibly played a role in his decision to decline a contract renewal with his current club.

"We had already reached an agreement with Phillipp," FSV sporting director Martin Schmidt announced on Thursday, "but he decided against the renewal shortly before signing the contract. We regret that very much."

Where Mwene may potentially be headed is unclear. German footballing magazine Kicker cites its own sources to claim that Roger Schmidt may be interested in bringing him to PSV Eindhoven.
