'We had a good game': Reactions to Germany's 1-0 defeat to France

Germany fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to France in their Euro 2020 opener. Check out the post-match comments here.
Joachim Löw, Germany coach:
"It was a brutally intense game, we gave all we had and fought until the end. I can't blame the team. An own goal decided the game. We lacked the ability to penetrate the French defence in the final third.

"We knew that France are very dangerous on the counter. We couldn't stop everything. They are incredibly fast up front.

"We have some things to work on. We've lost our first game, but everything is still possible. We still have two games left.

... on Mats Hummels' own goal: "You can't blame him for that. It was bad luck. The ball came in with a lot of power. It was difficult for Mats to clear the ball" (ZDF).

Toni Kroos, Germany midfielder:
"I think we implemented many of the things we wanted. In my opinion, we had a good game and didn't create fewer chances than France. An unfortunate goal decided the game" (ZDF).

Michael Ballack, former German international:
"Over the course of the second half, France had two very good counterattacking opportunities where luck was on our side. You can easily lose the game two or three-nil. Mbappé was outstanding today" (UEFA.com).

Joshua Kimmich, Germany defender:
"We weren't the worse team on the pitch. We dominated the game and then conceded a very, very unfortunate goal. Otherwise, there were relatively few goalscoring chances (...) It's a pity. A point would have been deserved (ZDF).

Didier Deschamps, France coach:
"We played a great game against very good opponents. I knew my players would be ready and we were up for the fight.

"We weren't far away from scoring the second goal that would have made us safe, but we didn't suffer that much in the second half. It was a strong match with quality and talent" (M6 via UEFA.com).

Paul Pogba, France midfielder:
"We're focused on our jobs on the pitch. We know we need to live up to our tag as world champions and come out on to the pitch with humility. When we need to suffer, we do it together and when we attack, we do it together" (M6 via UEFA.com).

Hugo Lloris, France goalkeeper and captain:
"The main thing was taking the three points. We really played as a team. We suffered especially in the second half when they held onto the ball and got it wide. We did the most important thing and we must savor that" (M6 via UEFA.com).
