Wirtz reflects on "successful" Champions League debut

Unsurprisingly, Florian Wirtz was delighted after scoring twice on his Champions League debut.

Florian Wirtz's debut in the Champions League could hardly have gone better.

He gave Leverkusen the lead against Feyenoord after just five minutes and then added a second to help his team to a crushing 4-0 win in Thursday's game at De Kuip.

Afterwards, the 21-year-old was understandably delighted.

"I didn't expect to come out of the first half with two goals. That helped us today and we could build on that," said Wirtz in a post-match interview.

“I've been looking forward to this game for the last few days. I went in with a lot of joy. It's all the more pleasing that it was successful.”

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso praised the youngster, saying that "he showed everyone just how good he is," while the club's managing director for sport, Simon Rolfes, stated that “he is getting better and better this season.”
