2. Bundesliga: Hertha hold firm to secure slender victory over Bochum in 2.BL curtain raiser

It was Stefan Leitl’s side who emerged victorious in the season opener at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, with Grønning’s goal separating the two sides despite Bochum creating several opportunities to find an equaliser.

The first half began in relatively cagey fashion, with neither side willing to overcommit in the early stages. The only moments of concern for Hertha came from a couple of risky back passes towards goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck, followed by some hopeful clearances, but otherwise there was little to report during the opening exchanges.

In typical German football fashion, play was delayed for around seven minutes shortly after the 20-minute mark after a flag in the away end appeared to be blocking an emergency exit.

Following the delay, Bochum carved out the first real opportunity of the evening just before the half-hour mark. New signing Berkan Taz found space on the left flank before whipping a dangerous cross towards target man Philipp Hofmann, but the forward’s header was comfortably claimed by Gersbeck.

With just six minutes of the first half remaining, Hertha struck to stun the Ruhrstadion crowd. Soufian Gouram received possession in the middle of the pitch before turning and playing a delightful through ball into the path of Grønning. The Danish striker was played onside by Yigit Karademir, allowing him to burst into the box before calmly dinking the ball over the onrushing Timo Horn to make it 1-0.

Bochum almost responded immediately, with Wittek delivering a cross from the left towards Taz. The forward was presented with a free header from close range but could only direct his effort wide, much to the frustration of the home supporters as Hertha went into the interval with a one-goal advantage.

Knowing his side needed fresh impetus, Bochum head coach Uwe Rösler made two changes at the break. Karol Mets came on for Karademir, making his debut in the process, while Mats Pannewig replaced Jean-Manuel Mbom.

The hosts continued to look dangerous from crosses down the left, but Hertha’s defence remained organised and refused to give Bochum a clear opening in the early stages of the second half.

Taz came agonisingly close to levelling the scores just past the hour mark. The Bochum attacker created space for himself on the edge of the area before unleashing a powerful effort that appeared destined for the back of the net, only for Niklas Kolbe to produce a superb defensive block to preserve Hertha’s lead.

As the clock ticked into the final ten minutes, the tension inside the Ruhrstadion began to rise. Bochum continued to throw men forward and send dangerous deliveries into the Hertha penalty area, but the visitors simply refused to budge.

Gersbeck stood tall between the posts, punching away or gathering anything that came within his reach as Hertha defended their narrow advantage with increasing determination.

The two minutes of added time came and went without Bochum finding a breakthrough, allowing Hertha to celebrate an impressive away victory in the opening game of the new 2. Bundesliga season.

It was a complete away performance from Leitl’s side, while Bochum were left frustrated and dejected after being unable to find a way through despite their second-half pressure.
