Report: Stuttgart cash in on Maffeo after Mallorca survive relegation

Through an automatic purchase clause in his loan agreement with RCD Mallorca, VfB Stuttgart have earned back the €3 million they just spent acquiring Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.

German footballing magazine Kicker reports that the Swabians are finally rid of one of their biggest transfer flops after Mallorca dramatically escaped relegation from the Spanish top flight.
Following a successful conclusion of the season that saw them escape the relegation playoffs on the final day, VfB Stuttgart at long last confirmed that they had exercised reported upon purchase clauses in the loan contracts of defenders Konstantinos Mavropanos and Hiroki Ito. In the case of Mavropanos (formerly property of Arsenal FC), an automatic purchase trigger of €3 million has been made public.

There's more good news for the Swabians. A former transfer flop has now been offloaded to offset the price paid for Mavropanos. German footballing magazine Kicker reports that RCD Mallorca's class-preservation in La Liga automatically activates a purchase clause for 24-year-old fullback Pablo Maffeo.

The transaction finally closes a complicated chapter between the player the BaWü club once paid some €10 million for and three separate loans aimed at getting him off the payroll. After a successful season at Mallorca, Maffeo has partially restored his estimated market vale. Transfermarkt.de lists the former Manchester City prospect as worth €5 million now.

Kicker goes on to report that the Spanish U21 international may not remain at Mallorca, who may be looking to flip him amid interest from other clubs.
