Confirmed: Jonjoe Kenny back in "Bundesliga Blue"

Nearly two years after his loan spell with Schalke 04 ended, a rather popular English right-back is headed back to the Bundesrepublik.

Hertha BSC confirmed the transfer of 25-year-old Liverpool native Jonjoe Kenny early Tuesday evening.
Hertha BSC officially confirmed an awaited transfer on Tuesday evening. Everton right-back and Liverpool native Jonjoe Kenny, after four successive loan spells away from his parent club, officially separated from the Merseyside Blues and will head to the German capital on a free transfer. As reported earlier, the 25-year-old receives a three-year-deal to don the blue stripes of Germany's "alte dame".

During his loan spell in German football during the 2019/20 campaign, Kenny enjoyed great popularity among German football fans. The Königsblauen were rather keen on keeping the England U21 international at the time, but could not afford the requested €18 million purchase price. Everton now receives no compensation as the player departs on an expiring contract.

Even though Kenny's estimated market value is nowhere near where it once was, Hertha Sporting CEO Fredi Bobic made clear that he and the front office did not feel as if the the fullback had exhausted his developmental potential. On the contrary, Bobic insisted that Kenny was "far from the end of his growth."

Following the acquisition of Filip Uremović, Hertha have actually brought in two capable right backs this offseason. In all likelihood, the team may have scant further use for 35-year-old Peter Pekarik, the most frequent starter at that position in the season just completed.

It is for certain that veteran Lukas Klünter shall leave the club on his expiring contract at the end of the month. Pekarik has been retained for one more year. Current reports suggest that Bobic is currently shopping Deyovaisio Zeefuik, another right back no longer needed.

"The club and those responsible have made great efforts to bring me here," Kenny noted in a brief statement, "I'm very pleased to represent  this club in the future."
