Confirmed: FC St. Pauli bring Johannes Eggestein back to Germany

After two years abroad, Johannes Eggestein is headed back to German football.
SV Werder Bremen Academy man Johannes Eggestein will return to German football next season after two years of playing in Austria and Belgium, respectively. The younger brother of SC Freiburg midfielder Maximilian Eggestein was signed by second tier side 1. FC St. Pauli on Tuesday evening.

Eggestein, now 24-years-of-age, made no secret of the fact that he was did not appreciate the manner in which his youth academy club essentially opted to give up on him last autumn. The former German youth international's time at Royal Antwerp F.C. was not successful as he failed to score a goal in 22 competitive appearances.

Eggestein did have some success in the 2020/21 campaign whilst out on loan at LASK Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga. There, the striker racked up 20 tallies across all competitions. At present, his estimated market value has dipped to an all-time low of €1.4 million.

Kiezkicker head-coach Timo Schultz praised the signing, also lauding the two Europa League goals Eggestein scored at Linz. For the St. Pauli gaffer, this counted as "solid international experience".

"I'm happy to be back in northern Germany," the Hanover native himself said, "The talks with those responsible at St. Pauli and the [club's] sporting concept quickly convinced me."
