The final matchday of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season ended in heartbreak for Borussia Dortmund, who missed a golden opportunity to win their first league title since 2012.

All they needed to do was beat Mainz at home, but they failed to do so and could only manage a 2-2 draw at Signal Iduna Park.

Elsewhere at the RheinEnergieStadion, Bayern Munich overcame FC Köln 2-1 to move above Dortmund at the top of the table on goal difference and secure their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.

After Andreas Hanche-Olsen opened the scoring for Mainz in the 15th minute, Dortmund wasted a glorious chance to equalize when Sebastien Haller missed from the penalty spot.

Instead, Mainz made it 2-0 nine minutes later through Karim Onisiwo, who headed home from an unmarked position.

Edin Terzic's side battled back to draw 2-2 thanks to second-half goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Niklas Süle, but it wasn't enough as Bayern took all three points against Köln.

Kingsley Coman gave the Bavarians the perfect start after eight minutes, but their title hopes suffered a blow in the 81st minute when Dejan Ljubicic equalized from the penalty spot.

But Jamal Musiala went on to score the decisive goal in the 89th minute, driving the ball past Marvin Schwäbe to secure Bayern's 11th league title in a row.
