VfB Stuttgart are said to have opened talks to sign Nick Woltemade on a free transfer from Werder Bremen when his contract expires in the summer.

However, Werder have not given up hope of keeping the striker.

"I would like to continue working with him. I think he's getting more and more into a rhythm with us, and he shows that in many ways, which is what makes him stand out," said Werder coach Ole Werner after Saturday's loss to Wolfsburg.

Werder's head of first-team football, Clemens Fritz, echoed the same sentiment.

"We are in talks and of course we would like Nick to choose Werder," Fritz said.

"No decision has been made yet. We would be happy if he stayed with us."
