Santiago Ascacibar has been suspended for six weeks by the German Football Association (DFB) as a result of his sending off in Stuttgart's 0-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Argentine midfielder spat at Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz towards the end of the game and was subsequently shown a straight red card.

Ascacibar's suspension means he will not be allowed to play for Stuttgart up to and including May 25.

"I have given an apology for my behavior to the club and the team. Of course, my apology is also aimed at my opponent Kai Havertz. Even if I was provoked, this sholdn't have happened," Ascacibar said, as quoted by the club.

Stuttgart are currently sitting 16th in the Bundesliga table.
