"To be honest, my situation was difficult. Therefore, it made sense for me to look at other clubs in the summer," Brekalo said in an interview with Sport Bild.
But the 21-year-old decided to wait and see how his situation would develop under new coach Oliver Glasner who made his arrival from Austrian side LASK Linz to replace Labbadia.
"My teammate Pavao Pervan, who knew the coach from Linz, told me: 'Wait and see what you think of his philosophy. I think you can take the next step under Glasner," Brekalo recalls.
Since the season started, Brekalo has emerged as an important player under Glasner who has moved the winger to a more central position with great success.
"I can make use of my strengths much better than before. When I play in the middle, I can receive the ball in a central position, play it back, across or shoot myself. My shooting technique is good, and I have much more possibilities than when I play down the line," Brekalo said.
Brekalo has scored four goals and made four assists in 10 appearances for Wolfsburg this season.
