SportBild Report: Bastian Schweinsteiger a candidate to replace Bobic at Frankfurt
A short report appearing on the website of Germany's main sporting tabloid may not count for much, but SportBild claims that Bastian Schweinsteiger is among the candidates on Eintracht Frankfurt's list of potential new sporting directors.
Reporters at Germany's preeminent "Boulevard-Zeitung" claim to have gained access to a candidate list of potential successors for Fredi Bobic's soon-to-be vacant sporting CEO chair. Evidently, German footballing legend Bastian Schweinsteiger is among one of the top candidates in the SGE's sights.
Schweinsteiger has accrued no direct administrative experience since retiring from professional football in October 2019. He currently works as a pundit for German public broadcaster ARD. The newspaper emphasizes that no contact between the former national team star and the club can be confirmed at this point.
While the very notion of appointing the 36-year-old directly to the post may seem a bit farfetched, "Schweine" has impressed in his brief commentary career. Many already compare his analysis to that of Jürgen Klopp when the current Liverpool head-coach dazzled the German public with his tactical analysis working for German television during the 2006 World Cup.
The SGE will certainly seek to reel in a big name to replace departing executives Bobic and Bruno Hübner, both of whom will be leaving this summer. Frankfurt formally declined to release Bobic from his contract last week, but this widely seen as a means of negotiating a large transfer sum with the 49-year-old's new destination, Hertha Berlin.
