Sami Khedira retires from football

German World Cup winner Sami Khedira will hang up his boots at the end of the 2020/21 season.
Sami Khedira has announced that he will be retiring from football following Hertha BSC's last game of the season against Hoffenheim on Saturday.

The 34-year-old defensive midfielder, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, commented on Wednesday:

“Exactly 14 years ago to the day, I was able to celebrate becoming German champions with VfB Stuttgart. That was a wonderful day, today is one that is very difficult for me personally, because on Saturday at around 5:15 o'clock, my career will come to an end.

“It's quite a difficult step and it's hard for me to talk about it, but it's the right decision. 15 years in professional football have had their effect and I have to honestly assess what I still can and can't do. What prevails at the end of the day is my gratitude for everything that I've been able to experience."

Besides Hertha, Khedira played for Stuttgart, Real Madrid and Juventus through his illustrious career.

He made 77 appearances for Germany.
