Mats Hummels: "It sounds stupid, but I'm incredibly proud of our team"

Although Borussia Dortmund lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid, Mats Hummels was "incredibly proud" of the team after the match.

In what could be Mats Hummels' last game for Borussia Dortmund, the 35-year-old couldn't help his side lose 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Speaking after the game, Hummels explained how proud he was of the team, even though they didn't come out on top.

"We played a great game here. It sounds stupid, but I'm incredibly proud of our team, who played against a team that has been in the Champions League final 28 times," said Hummels.

“Then we make one little mistake and Real score like they've been doing for 100 years. That's a quality somewhere. It just hurts today,” he added.

“They hardly ever make mistakes. They never really give you an easy goal. We had four chances and one of them had to go in. It's not about pointing fingers. Karim [Adeyemi] had two great shots.”

Hummels is out of contract with Dortmund this summer and it remains unclear whether he will sign a new deal.

Asked if the game against Real Madrid was his last, Hummels replied:

“I have no idea, I really don't. It feels weird not knowing. I like the situation, but it's a bit weird too.”
