On Monday, Thomas Müller officially announced that he had played his last game for the German national team.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has now commented on the 34-year-old's decision, praising his impact on German football.
"I am grateful that I was able to accompany Thomas for part of his career, with the national team and with FC Bayern. It was a pleasure to work with him," Nagelsmann said in a statement on the German Football Association's website.
"Thomas is a passionate professional who is still as passionate about football as he was on his first day. He enriched our European Championship team not only with his sporting qualities, but also as a leader, a role model and a figure of identification. I found Thomas to be a very intelligent player - soccer-wise, emotionally and fundamentally.
“As much as I regret that he will no longer be with us, I hope that Thomas will continue to shape German football - as a player for FC Bayern and in other roles in the future. We will miss him very much in the national team,” said Nagelsmann.
Müller made his debut for Germany in 2010 and went to make 131 appearances for the national team, scoring 45 goals and providing 41 assists.
