Germany coach Löw has already announced that Neuer will remain his first-choice keeper until after the European Championship in 2020.
Meanwhile, ter Stegen is determined to keep working hard as he wants to show the Germany coach that he deserves to take over the number one spot.
"I want to push until 'Jogi Löw' eventually decides that I'll be the number one goalkeeper," ter Stegen said in an interview with Sport Bild.
Ter Stegen admits he was disappointed when he heard that Neuer would be given the nod instead of him at last year's World Cup.
"I was convinced that I played a very good season. Therefore, I was obviously frustrated when 'Jogi' Löw told me about his decision. I don't want to fool anyone. Regardless, my claim remains the same," he explained.
Generally, ter Stegen feels he's recognized more outside of Germany.
"I may be more in focus abroad - also outside of Spain - than I am in Germany. There, everything is very focused on the Bundesliga. Even in England, more is being written about Barcelona. However, since our victory at the Confederations Cup in 2017, the perception of me has changed a bit. The fans saw that there's another German goalkeeper whom they can trust," the 26-year-old explained.
Ter Stegen has made 21 appearances for the German national team.
