Sport Bild Report: Frimpong nears agreement on contract extension

Effectively confirming a report originating from Germany's main sporting tabloid, Bayer 04 Leverkusen trainer Xabi Alonso has dropped strong hints that a contract extension for Jeremie Frimpong will be confirmed soon.

German journalist Stephan van Nocks of the Bundesrepublik's preeminent footballing publication nevertheless suggests that the two sides may have more work to do in order to come to terms.
After Argentine midfielder Exequiel Palacios inked a new deal earlier this week reports have been surfacing that Simon Rolfes and the Bayer 04 Leverkusen administrative team are hard at work tying another one of their key players down to a long-term deal. Germany's "Sport Bild" tabloid claims that 22-year-old Dutch right-wing-back Jeremie Frimpong will receive a new long-term-deal.

Rolfes and the Bayer front office demonstrated focused administrative rigor in getting players such as Florian Wirtz and Patrik Schick to sign new working papers in the summer of 2022. This year, Palacios, Piero HIncapie, and Edmond Tapsoba have also extended their deals. The German tabloid, in a report published Friday, claims that Frimpong - often the subject of exit links - will be next.

"This is an important sign for the project and the team," B04 trainer Xabi Alonso noted when commenting on Palacios' extension earlier this week, "We want to have a set of stable ideas. We've worked out important principles and continuing along this path is easier if there aren't so many changes."

"Maybe there will be other extensions too," Xabi added, "I only know the target list. That's not my area."

German journalist Stephan van Nocks - the Leverkusen correspondent for Germany's Kicker Magazine - reports that the two sides are in negotiations, yet emphasizes that it may prove difficult for them to come to terms. Frimpong will not only want a significant pay increase, but also a reasonable exit clause that can allow him to depart for the Premiership next summer if he so desires.
