Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke says he's 'very grateful' to Bayern München boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for letting Mats Hummels return to BVB.

After spending three seasons at Allianz Arena, Hummels was adamant to return to his former club, and Rummenigge and Bayern respected his wish.

"[Hummels] absolutely wanted to go. I'm very grateful to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for respecting the firm will of his player. I found that extraordinary. The way these negotiations went was an indication to me of how respectfully we now treat each other at the highest level," Watzke told DPA.

For Watzke, it was no problem to take Hummels back despite the fact that the centre-back left BVB to join their Bavarian rivals back in 2016.

"Mats has always had the opportunity of returning to BVB. He found it very difficult to leave us and join Bayern back then," Watzke said.

Hummels has signed a deal until 2022 at Dortmund.
