Bayer Leverkusen star Kevin Volland was invited to a trial at Bayern München as a young player, but opted for a move to their rivals 1860 München.

Speaking in an interview with Goal and Spox, Volland has explained his decision.

"I felt I had a better chance of becoming a professional at 1860. 'Die Löwen' attached great importance to their youth work at the time and their first team depended on good prospects from their youth ranks," Volland said and added:

"It was different at Bayern. At that time, they already had an outstanding squad and the means to sign world-class players."

The 27-year-old scored 20 goals in 60 appearances for 1860 München. He was signed by Hoffenheim in 2012 and moved on to join Leverkusen in 2016.
