Robert Lewandowski believes players from the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga have an advantage in the race for the Ballon d'Or award.

When asked if he believes he has to win the Champions League with Bayern to be in contention to clinch the award, which is awarded to the best footballer in the world every year based on votes from journalists, coaches and players, Lewandowski told Sport Bild:

"The question is whether this award is about being the best player or about playing in the most popular league. In my opinion, players from the Premier League and La Liga simply have an advantage in this regard.

"Back in 2013, Franck Ribery played outstandingly and FC Bayern won the Champions League, but he only finished third in the vote.

"Nevertheless, I still hope that I will be able to win this award as a Bayern player at some point," Lewandowski said.

Real Madrid's Luka Modric won the Ballon d'Or in 2018.
