BVB boss in social media storm over TV appearance about coronavirus

Fans are angry after Sportschau appearance.
BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke delivered bold statements in the ARD channel's "Sportschau" (Sports show) about the Corona crisis.

"We have to go back to normal at some point. We shouldn't overdo it either. I would classify the health risk for a professional team consisting of athletes as not so serious."

With regard to the Bundesliga competition, on possible solidarity payments between the clubs, Watzke continued:

"We are competitors and an economic enterprise. At the end of the day, clubs that have worked well in recent years cannot reward those that have not."

It all caused a violent storm on social media.

Some of the Twitter comments:

  • @BenniZander : "Parts of #Watzke's statements leave me speechless. At the beginning of this whole corona crisis here in Germany to speak of the fact that 'one has to go back to normal' and 'one shouldn't overdo it'. Madness. #sportschau"

  • @TheCorsten : "I am shocked that #Watzke continues to testify that it could have been done differently. Sorry if I say that so hard. What #watzke says is just stupid and pure indifference. Coal for brains. Human with zero empathy. #coronavirus"

  • @k_bachhofer : "What an embarrassing appearance by #Watzke in the sports show. A crisis always shows the true face and attitude of everyone at the end of the day."

  • @astimumm : "On an arrogance scale from 1 to 10, #Watzke is at 28."

  • @lokonda1904 : "What I've been saying for years: Compared to #Watzke, people like #Rummenigge and # Hoeneß are orphans."

  • @patlen73 : "I think that a bag of pure brain should be donated to this gentleman. The Bundesliga has to stick together"

  • @justolf : "Human bankruptcy declaration"

  • @Rautist7 : "Respect, Mr. Watzke. As always, lust for money suits you well."

  • @DirkJes "It really takes the first dead competitive athlete / professional footballer before the last “honk” can understand it. You can only #shake your head."

Being social media, there were, off course, people that backed him up too.

But a clear majority, were quite furious ... even according to social media standards.
