Schalke 04 boss Sascha Riether has refused to rule out a new contract for Benjamin Stambouli.

According to reports, the 29-year-old is expected to leave Veltins-Arena, when his current deal expires in the summer.

But Riether, Schalke's first-team coordinator, says a contract extension is not out of the question.

"We already had good talks with him before the corona crisis, which is a sign that we are willing to keep 'Benji'. Hardly anyone lives and breathes for Schalke like he does," Riether told Kicker and added:

"I believe that 'Benji' and the club have sent good signals to each other."

Stambouli has been sidelined since he suffered a foot injury in October.
