The 28-year-old centre-back has signed a long-term contract with Ajax, running until 2029. According to reports, the Eredivisie side will pay €10.5 million for the transfer, with an additional €1.5 million possible in performance-related bonuses.

Itakura spent three seasons with the Foals after joining from Manchester City in 2022, having previously impressed during a loan spell at Schalke.

During his time at Gladbach, he became a key figure in central defence.

His move to Ajax marks a return to the Netherlands, where he played for FC Groningen between 2019 and 2021. While Eintracht Frankfurt were also reportedly interested in signing the Japan international, Ajax ultimately won the race.

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes expressed his excitement about the signing: “We've been working on this transfer for a long time. Ko Itakura becomes the first Japanese player in our club's history, which is a special milestone.”

“He brings the experience and stability we need at the back. He is strong in duels, composed on the ball, and tactically intelligent. With his mentality and leadership qualities, he can play an important role for us both on and off the pitch.”

Itakura will now look to help Ajax in their Champions League campaign, adding international experience to a young defensive unit.
