Franz Beckenbauer: 'Thomas Müller should play for Germany again'

Thomas Müller deserves to play for Germany again, says Franz Beckenbauer.
Bayern München honorary president Franz Beckenbauer has called for Germany coach Joachim Löw to bring back Thomas Müller.

In March last year, Müller, Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels were omitted from the national team set-up by Germany coach Joachim Löw, who wanted to put faith in younger players instead.

Beckenbauer, however, believes the 30-year-old deserves to be brought back into the squad after having impressed since Hansi Flick was appointed Bayern coach in November.

"Thomas Müller should play for Germany again. Joachim Löw could bring him back without losing face," Beckenbauer told Bild.

"Müller went through a difficult time at Bayern and was on the bench for a long time. But you've got to see that he has developed further there, too. Müller is now the absolute leader. His personality would certainly help the national team," the former German legend said before underlining that "the decision is naturally up to the national team coach."

Müller has made 100 appearances for Germany, scoring 38 goals.
