RB Leipzig came close to signing Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé in 2015, when he was playing for AS Monaco's youth team, claims former club boss Ralf Rangnick.

"We had Kylian on our radar when he was a youth player at AS Monaco," Rangnick told Bild.

"In February 2015, there were even two meetings between us in Paris," he added.

Ultimately, however, Mbappé and his father decided against signing for RB Leipzig. Instead, the striker stayed at Monaco until he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

The 21-year-old featured in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final between PSG and RB Leipzig that saw the French champions go through to the final with a 3-0 win.
