Wolfsburg defeated an uninspired Schalke 04 side at the Volkswagen Arena thanks to a late goal from newcomer Daniel Ginczek who was sent on the pitch with 15 minutes left of the match.

'Die Wölfe' were off to a good start to the match and took the lead midway through the first-half when John Anthony Brooks headed the ball into the net following a corner.

Domenico Tedesco's Schalke side were far below the standards of last season's high-flying campaign, where 'The Royal Blues' took the second place, and when Matija Nastasic was shown a red card after lifting his studs in a challenge on Wout Weghorst after 65 minutes, the away side's chances of taking a point looked slim.

But with five minutes to go, Schalke were awarded a penalty as Brooks kicked Breel Embolo in the head inside the penalty area. Substitute Nabil Bentaleb was given the responsiblity from the penalty spot, and he didn't disappoint. The Algerian midfielder slotted the ball past Koen Casteels to make it 1-1.

After Bentaleb's goal, it looked like a draw, but Ginczek showed his worth for his new club four minutes into injury time as he slotted the ball home after a rebound landed at his feet at the edge of the area.

Elsewhere, Werder Bremen and Hannover drew 1-1, FC Augsburg beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1, Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-0 against Freiburg while Hertha BSC defeated FC Nürnberg 1-0.
