A few days ago, VfL Wolfsburg were reported to be very close to the signing of Olympique Lyon winger Maxwel Cornet for a reported fee of €17 million.

However, after intensive negotiations today, it's now clear that the 21-year-old will not join 'Die Wölfe', Sky understands.

Olympique Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas already said yesterday Cornet would not be allowed to leave as the French club hasn't been able to sign a suitable replacement for him.

But as mentioned, the Wolfsburg and Lyon still continued the negotiations today - but apparently, the transfer has ultimately fallen through.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg are also said to be in negotiations with another Ligue 1 club - Lille - for Thiago Mendes, at 26-year-old central midfielder.
