On Monday, Ilkay Gündogan announced his decision to retire from international football.

That leaves Germany in need of a new captain - and a clear favourite has already emerged.

According to Sky Germany, Joshua Kimmich has the best chance of taking over the responsibility. This makes sense, as the Bayern Munich midfielder was already Gündogan's deputy.

With Gündogan, Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller all having retired from international duty, Kimmich has made more appearances than any other outfield player in the squad, with 91 caps to his name.

Manuel Neuer, who was captain between 2016 and 2022, has made 124 appearances, but it's unclear whether he will continue to play for Germany at the age of 38, with a decision expected soon.
