Xaver Schlager has suffered a muscle injury in his left thigh and will be out for a number of weeks, RB Leipzig confirmed on Thursday.

According to Leipziger Volkszeitung, the injury could keep the midfielder out for the rest of the season.

"This new injury hits us very hard, especially Xaver himself. He worked extremely hard for his comeback and gave everything to help us with his qualities in the final spurt of the season," said RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer.

“He was supposed to get match fitness with the national team, but now he has to take another break. We're giving Xaver all the support he needs at the moment. Of course, it's annoying that we have to report another injury after the international break.”

Schlager had only just returned from a knee injury. He has made just five appearances for Leipzig this season.
