Following the sacking of Marco Rose as coach of RB Leipzig, Zsolt Löw has been put in charge on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.

Löw, who has previously worked as an assistant coach for Leipzig, did not hesitate when he was offered the job and cancelled all other plans.

“It's an interesting story. I was booked for the weekend because we were going to celebrate a birthday. Then (RB Leipzig managing director for sport) Marcel Schäfer called me out of the blue and said I was the man for the job. RB Leipzig means a lot to me. This is where I started my coaching career. I was part of this family until 2018. The birthday was cancelled, of course,” said Löw at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Marcel and I talked a lot and came to a decision together. He can be very persuasive. It's an honor for me. My diary was actually full until May. I was in Dortmund for the aforementioned birthday and had to tell my wife and children.

"When Jürgen Klopp and Oliver Mintzlaff (RB Leipzig's global head of soccer and chairman of the supervisory board respectively) believe in you, you don't think twice. I'm here for a reason. We have a lot of work to do and, of course, big goals.”

Löw's first game in charge of Leipzig will be Wednesday's DFB-Pokal semi-final against VfB Stuttgart.
