Shkodran Mustafi has decided to call time on his career as a professional footballer.

The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Tuesday that the 2014 World Cup winner will join the German U17 national team as an assistant to Marc Meister on July 1.

"I have been thinking about gaining coaching experience for a long time. On the one hand, it's a shame that it's happening so soon because I would have liked to play football for longer myself," said Mustafi.

"On the other hand, I'm really looking forward to the time ahead and to taking my first steps as a coach with the DFB. I want to pass on to the boys all the experience I gained during my time with the U15s, U21s and, of course, the senior national team.

Mustafi made 20 appearances for the German national team between May 2014 and October 2017, scoring two goals.

At club level, the 32-year-old played for Everton, Sampdoria, Valencia, Arsenal, Schalke 04 and Levante.
